چکیده
ABSTRACT The tidal tails of Palomar 5 (Pal 5) have been the focus many spectroscopic studies in an attempt to identify individual stars lying along stream and characterize their kinematics. well-studied trailing tail has explored out a distance 15? from cluster centre, while less than 4° examined leading tail. In this paper, we present results study two fields that observed with AAOmega spectrograph on Anglo-Australian telescope. One these lies roughly 7? tail, beyond what previously spectroscopically. Combining our measurements kinematics line strengths Pan-STARRS1 photometric data Gaia EDR3 astrometry, adopt probabilistic approach 16 high probability belonging Pal stream. Eight lie outermost field sky positions confirm presence ‘fanning’ arm. We also revisit published radial velocity incorporate astrometry remove interloping stars. With final sample 109 bona fide stars, 3D full extent system. provide catalogue for future modeling work.

The Extended Tidal Tails of Palomar 5 : Tracers of the Galactic Potential
We detected extended, curved stellar tidal tails emanating from the sparse, disrupting halo globular cluster Pal 5, which cover 10 on the sky. These streams allow us to infer the orbit of Pal 5 and to ultimately constrain the Galactic potential at its location. 1. Palomar 5: A Globular Cluster Torn Apart by the Milky Way Palomar 5 is an extraordinarily sparse globular cluster in the outer halo ...
متن کاملHα Kinematics of Tidal Tails in Interacting Systems: Projection Effects and Dark Matter in TDGs
Several interacting systems exhibit at the tip of their long tidal tails massive condensations of atomic hydrogen, which may be the progenitors of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies. Because, quite often, these tails are observed edge-on, projection effects have been claimed to account for the large HI column densities measured there. Here we show that determining the velocity field all along the tidal featu...
متن کاملTidal Tails of Star Clusters
Based on recent findings of a formation mechanism of substructure in tidal tails by Küpper, Macleod & Heggie (2008) we investigate a more comprehensive set of N -body models of star clusters on orbits about a Milky-Way-like potential. We find that the predicted epicyclic overdensities arise in any tidal tail no matter which orbit the cluster follows as long as the cluster lives long enough for ...
متن کاملOn the structure of tidal tails
We examine the longitudinal distribution of the stars escaping from a cluster along tidal tails. Using both theory and simulations, we show that, even in the case of a star cluster in a circular galactic orbit, when the tide is steady, the distribution exhibits maxima at a distance of many tidal radii from the cluster.
متن کاملTidal tails in CDM cosmologies
We study the formation of tidal tails in pairs of merging disk galaxies with structural properties motivated by current theories of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies. In a recent study, Dubinski, Mihos & Hernquist (1996) showed that the formation of prominent tidal tails can be strongly suppressed by massive and extended dark haloes. For the large halo-to-disk mass ratio expected in CDM cosmol...
